Almost bought it but I'm glad I didn't. The problem with the Sodastream is that the CO2 tank it uses cannot be refilled easily and you also cannot access the exchange system in most locations. The Primo Flavorstation is different. It uses a CO2 tank that is exactly the same size as a 20 ounce paintball tank. You can refill it at anyplace that sells paintball supplies or you can just take it to your local welding supply dealer and let them refill it for you.
A fill costs four or five dollars. The claim with both of these systems is that they will save you money. I've done the math and the Sodastream doesn't come close to saving you money. The Flavorstation, on the other hand, saves you a lot of money. It comes with one bottle. My wife and I decided we needed four, so we bought three more. We also bought another CO2 tank because there is no real warning when you are going to run out. With the extra tank, we have plenty of time to refill the empty one.
We also passed on the flavorings that are available from Primo mainly because we don't like artificial sugars and prefer to drink flavored carbonated water without any sugar. We found a company on the web called Fairie's Finest that sells flavorings that work perfectly. You put 3 or 4 drops in the bottle after you carbonate the water and it works great.
They have 50 flavors including peach, root beer, cherry, and huckleberry. Because the flavors are so highly concentrated, the one ounce bottle will last a very long time.
Adding sugar makes it taste like pop. We've had our Flavorstation for a couple of months now and we love it. We use it several times a day. It is a really cool device and it is great not having empty bottles and cans accumulating in our home. A big plus is that it is also good for the environment. I am hoping that Primo will achieve the kind of success that Sodastream already has. When we bought ours, it wasn't available on Amazon and, even though it was supposed to be available at Lowes, it wasn't.
We ended up buying it from Primo directly and, with a coupon code we found online, the price was really good. That same code worked again when we purchased the three extra bottles. Btw, my research indicates that even thought Primo says you should only fill the tank with "food grade" CO2, there is no such thing as food grade CO2. CO2 is CO2 and it doesn't really matter where you buy it as long as it isn't some shady place.
A lot of people use Dick's just because it is really convenient. Jackson on August 15, There are pros and cons to this system. A major pro over other systems is it uses a standard 20oz CO2 bottle like the type you get from a paintball shop, and is refillable without modifications or adapters.
That difference alone is why I never bothered with soda stream when it came out. Now there are adapters so it isn't as huge of a difference, but it simplifies everything in a pretty major way and remains a solid selling point in my view. The major con and I'm surprised it hasn't lead to a safety recall is the cap design. It is absolute crap and the engineer that thought this was a good idea is a moron.
The issue should you care to understand cap design is the number of turns to open and the lack of thread venting. Get a soda bottle and you can see the issue. A standard soda bottle requires approximately 1 full turn to open. The threads on both the cap and the bottle neck have gaps that allow pressure to release with the cap still retained.
It also allows the pressure to be release in a controlled manner. The cap also does not have pressure relief gaps. If you fill the bottle with ice cold water, carbonate the water, then add ice cold syrup, then close the cap and allow the bottle to reach room temperature, and even without shaking the bottle you open the cap, the cap WILL blow off with enough energy to cause an injury if your hand isn't covering the top of the cap, and about half the contents will be on the floor in any case.
It is also the case with this bottle that if a pressurized bottle is dropped, the cap will usually blow off. If Primo had an engineer with so much as two brain cells to rub together and allowed said engineer to do their job, they would redesign the bottle with the same thread sizes to maintain compatibility but just add thread length to the neck and gaps in the cap.
It isn't rocket science so I'm assuming they either don't have a competent engineer on board, or the company's management is so grossly negligent that they don't give a rat's whiskers that their cap design is a glaring product liability to their customers.
So mixed feelings on this one. I have had multiple bottles explode spontaneously on me. The cap blows off and sounds like an M80 and the contents fly everywhere. I'm using this until a replacement shows up, but I don't think this model is suitable for ever closing the lid on one of these bottles.

By Summer Spees on August 8, I had looked at the other major brand of soda machine at my local WalMart but decided to go online to read reviews before shelling out this much money.
Boy am I glad I did! The other brand only uses brand-specific CO2 tanks, but the Primo does not. Unfortunately, I live like 60 miles plus from the nearest Dick's so I'm still not sure where I'll get the tank refilled Gander Mountain maybe or anywhere that sells paintball guns? Also, the flavors that came with expire in three months and I really don't think we'll use that much syrup by then, but we'll see.
The flavors are all caffeinated and I have three young children so they won't be able to have any of the particular flavors that came with the machine. All in all, I wish I could have picked which flavors to get with machine, but the machine was totally worth it anyhow. Also, if you have a sensitivity to artificial sweetners like I do, the Citrus Mist, Cola, and Diet Cola will bother you.
Still gets 5 stars, but if I were rating their flavors alone they'd probably only get a 2. I don't even drink soda, never have, but I have a bad habit of not drinking enough fluids and I thought that if I could carbonate juice or tea or something else tasty that maybe I would drink more fluids.
I think this machine will help.
